This fast-paced international competition called for a visionary design for a new international airport in Vlore, Albania. Collaborating closely with Morgan Fleming, we developed a concept that harmonises architecture with the natural landscape, reflecting the rich environmental context of the region.
At the heart of the design is the integration of landscape as a fundamental design element. Inspired by the organic forms of leaves native to Albania’s forests, the terminal’s roof structure employs a modular and repetitive system. This strategy not only echoes the natural rhythms of the surrounding environment but also enables a more efficient construction process—reducing material usage, accelerating build time, and lowering costs.
The distinctive roof geometry is designed to accommodate extensive green roofs, transforming the terminal into a living part of the landscape and establishing a strong visual identity for Vlore’s gateway. Internally, the open-span structure creates uplifting, daylit spaces that enhance the passenger experience with minimal structural intervention.
Working in partnership with the client, Mabetex, our design contributed to the winning proposal, positioning the airport as both a sustainable infrastructure and regional landmark.
