The Bard and The Hewett
Location
London, UK
Status/Date
Completed/ 2013-2021
Project type
Commercial Office/ Retail
The Bard (13 storeys) and The Hewett (9 storeys) are two office buildings that frame three retained historic structures and directly face a conservation area across Curtain Road. In response to the surrounding urban context, the upper levels are carefully set back to respect the neighbouring rooflines along this busy thoroughfare. Drawing inspiration from the site's industrial heritage and former concrete warehouses, the façades are articulated with concrete-textured mega-frames and infilled with warm terracotta louvres. These louvres not only contribute to the building’s visual rhythm but also provide solar shading, with their density and placement tailored to each façade’s orientation.
Both buildings are designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent and EPC B ratings. Sustainability features include roof-mounted photovoltaic panels, green roofs, and a total of 168 cycle parking spaces, complemented by changing rooms and shower facilities to support active travel.
This project was delivered while working at Perkins & Will.
